Sila National Park (Italian: Parco nazionale della Sila) is an Italian national park located in Calabria on the Sila Plateau. It was established in 1997 and covers an area of about 74,000 hectares (180,000 acres). The park’s highest mountains are Mt. Botte Donato (1,928 meters) in Sila Grande and Mt. Gariglione (1,764 meters) in Sila Piccola. The park was created by a Regional Decree on November 14, 2002, and has its own management agency. It includes areas that were once part of the Calabria National Park, which was established in 1968. The park protects important natural areas in Sila Piccola, Sila Grande, and Sila Greca, covering a total of 736.95 square kilometers (284.54 square miles) across 21 municipalities (comuni) and 6 mountain communities (comunità montane) in the three Calabrian provinces of Catanzaro, Cosenza, and Crotone.
