Irazú Volcano National Park, or in Spanish, Parque Nacional Volcán Irazú, is a protected area in the Central Conservation Zone of Costa Rica. It covers the region around the Irazú Volcano in Cartago Province, which includes an area that was once called the Ruben Torres Rojas Forest Reserve and is now named the Prusia Forest Reserve. The volcano is still active, but its last major eruptions happened between 1963 and 1965. Since then, there have been small eruptions and minor lava flows.
The park has a tree planting project to help restore the land damaged by past eruptions. The forest includes trees such as pines, as well as both native and non-native plants. A part of the forest is made up mostly of oaks and alders, which help protect the water source of the Reventado River.
The Crater Principal lake has a greenish yellow color because rainwater dissolves minerals from the walls of the crater. The lake’s color can also change to a rust-red shade depending on the minerals present. To the east of Crater Principal is the inactive, dry Diego de la Haya crater, which is filled with volcanic ash.
