Description

Pico Bonito National Park is located in the northern part of Honduras, within the Cordillera Nombre de Dios mountain range. It is found in the municipality of El Porvenir, near the coastal city of La Ceiba. The park is part of the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor.

The park covers an area of 1,073 square kilometers, including its surrounding buffer zone, which is approximately 20 by 20 miles or 30 by 35 kilometers.

The management of this protected area is handled by the Pico Bonito National Park Foundation (FUPNAPIB), a nonprofit group that does not work for the government. This organization was officially created in 1993 by law 192-93 of the National Congress. Today, there is a partnership between FUPNAPIB and the State Forest Administration (AFE-COHDEFOR) to jointly manage the park.

FUPNAPIB runs programs focused on protecting forests, managing natural resources, teaching about the environment, and promoting equality between men and women. In 2005, FUPNAPIB partnered with the EcoLogic Development Fund and the World Bank’s BioCarbon Fund to start a project that captures and stores carbon. This project helps reduce the harmful effects of climate change by offering training and jobs to local communities in reforestation and agroforestry.

This area is well-known for activities such as birdwatching, rafting, kayaking, and hiking. Many tour companies provide transportation, guided tours, and accommodations for visitors.
