Paanajärvi National Park is a Russian national park located in the Loukhsky District of the Republic of Karelia, which is in northwestern Russia. The park was created in 1992. It has received a PAN Parks certificate.
Geography
Paanajärvi National Park is located in the Maanselkä hills of the Karelia Region, near the border between Finland and Russia in northern Europe.
The park protects an area of 1,043.71 square kilometers (402.98 square miles) of untouched Scandinavian and Russian Taiga forest habitats, along with lakes and rivers. Nuorunen, the highest point in Karelia, is located within the park.
Oulanka National Park is next to Paanajärvi on the west side within Finland, offering continuous protection for the Karelian Taiga habitat.
