Location

The National Park is located in Northern Romania, in the Rodna Mountains. The Rodna Mountains are a part of the Eastern Carpathians.

Description

The Rodna Mountains National Park covers an area of 465.99 km² (179.92 sq mi). It was designated as a natural protected area by Law Number 5, passed on March 6, 2000, and published in Monitorul Oficial Number 152 on April 12, 2000. The park includes a mountainous region with features such as ridges, peaks, cirques, crevasses, caves, moraines, springs, valleys, forests, and pastures. It is home to many types of plant and animal species, some of which are legally protected.

Natural reserves within the park include:

  • Bistrița-Năsăud County: Poiana cu narcise de pe Masivul Saca (5 hectares or 12 acres), Ineu-Lala (2,568 hectares or 6,350 acres), Izvoarele Mihăiesei (50 hectares or 120 acres)
  • Maramureș County: Izvorul Bătrâna (0.5 hectares or 1.2 acres), Pietrosu Mare (scientific reservation, 3,300 hectares or 8,200 acres), Piatra Rea (scientific reservation, 409 hectares or 1,010 acres)
  • Suceava County: Bila-Lala (325.1 hectares or 803 acres)
