Geography

The park is found in the Sierra Maestra mountain range. It is located 50 kilometers (31 miles) to the west of Guamá, in the Guamá Municipality of Santiago de Cuba Province.

The park covers an area of 229.38 square kilometers (88.56 square miles). It borders Pico La Bayamesa National Park to the east. The park was created on January 8, 1980, when Bill 27/1980 was passed.

The park was named after Pico Turquino, which is the highest point in Cuba at 1,975 meters (6,480 feet) in elevation. Other mountains in Turquino National Park include Pico Cuba, Pico Real, and Pico Suecia.

Ecology

The park has tropical forest areas, such as the Cuban moist forests near sea level and the Cuban pine forests higher up. The park includes part of Cuba's southeastern coast area, located at the Marea del Portillo beach.
