Description

Nearby cities include Tizi Ouzou to the north and Bouïra to the south. The park has complex geological features, as well as many forests, caves, gorges, and important animal life. Among the animals is the endangered Barbary macaque, Macaca sylvanus, a primate that once lived in a much larger area of North Africa than it does today.

Name

The name of the mountain chain comes from the Kabyle word "Jjerjer," which means "great cold" or "elevation." This word is based on the older Kabyle phrase "Jer n Jer," meaning "the mountain of the mountains." The Roman Empire called the mountain "Iron Mountain" in Latin (Mons Ferratus). This name was chosen because of the type of soil in the area and the strong resistance shown by the Kabyle people against Roman control of Kabylie. The name "Djurdjura" is also used for villages in this mountain range. The Kabyle phrase "Mmis n'Djerdjer" means "children of the Djurdjura," referring to people who live in the mountains. There is also a Kabyle group of women called "DjurDjura."
