Serranía de la Neblina National Park

It is located in the state of Amazonas, southwest of the Parima Tapirapecó National Park. It includes the area of the Cerro de la Neblina, whose highest peak on the Venezuelan side is Pico 31 de Março at 2,992 meters above sea level. The massif spans into Brazilian territory, where the highest point is Pico da Neblina at 3,014 meters.

Location

On the Brazilian side, there is also a national park called Pico da Neblina National Park, which protects this ecosystem.

Physical

This mountain range is always covered in clouds, which is why it is called "La Neblina" ("the mist"). Found in the center of the Amazon rainforest, it is the tallest point in the region. La Serrania La Neblina is the highest tepuy and is divided by the Baría Grande Canyon, one of the deepest canyons in the world. The park, along with the Parima Tapirapecó park, is part of the Orinoco-Casiquiare biosphere reserve.

Environment

The park is located in the Guayanan Highlands moist forests ecoregion.

The park has a variety of endemic plants, including one shrub called Neblinaria celiae, which is found only in the park. There are also many types of carnivorous plants.

The park is home to jaguars, tapirs (Tapirus terrestris), cunaguaro (Felis pardalis), and many different species of monkeys. Snakes are common in the park and include anacondas, bothrops, and green mapanares (Lachesis muta). The bothrops and green mapanares are very poisonous.
