The Sierra del Lacandón is a low mountain range made of limestone and dolomite in Guatemala and Mexico. It is located in the north-west part of El Petén and the south-east part of Chiapas. The highest areas of the range are near the Mexican border, with coordinates 17°14′39″N 91°12′08″W and 17°11′42″N 91°05′10″W. The range has ridges that run from southeast to northwest, formed by folded layers of Cretaceous limestone and dolomite hills that rise above the lowlands of the Petén Basin.
Sierra del Lacandón National Park
The Sierra del Lacandón National Park covers about 501,290 acres (202,865 hectares) and was created in 1990. It is part of the Maya Biosphere Reserve and has a wide variety of plants and animals. The park is important for the Mesoamerican Biological Corridor because it links protected areas in northern Guatemala to those in southern Mexico, such as the Montes Azules Biosphere Reserve in Chiapas.
Many ancient Maya archaeological sites are located within the park. These include Piedras Negras, El Porvenir, Macabilero, La Pasadita, El Hormiguero, and El Ceibo.
