Arcipelago di La Maddalena National Park is a coastal and marine national park located on the coast of Sardinia, Italy. The park was created on April 1, 1994, and later updated by a law change on May 17, 1996. It covers more than 12,000 hectares of land and sea, including 180 kilometers of coastline. This area includes all the islands and small islands within the territory of the Municipality of La Maddalena, Italy. The park will also be part of the Bocche di Bonifacio international marine park, which is expected to be established soon.
The park includes several beaches and islands, such as La Maddalena, Caprera, Spargi, Spargiotto, Budelli, Razzoli, Santa Maria, and the Isles of Nibani, Mortorio, Soffi, and Camere.
As of mid-2020, the park had only one private resident. Mauro Morandi had lived in a shelter from World War II on Budelli Island since 1989 and served as an unofficial caretaker. He was scheduled to leave by the end of 2020. In 2016, the park’s president explained that Morandi could not stay indefinitely: "[He] represents a person who chooses to live in harmony with nature and dedicate his life to care and observation… No one denies his role in preserving the history of the place… But it is difficult to create a legal agreement for someone in his situation." Morandi moved to an apartment in Maddalena and is now writing his memoirs.
