In 2006, a group of UNESCO Vietnam representatives visited the area and determined that the park is qualified to be recognized as a natural and cultural World Heritage site. The Vietnamese government is working on papers to send to UNESCO. A road project that caused disagreement was proposed by the local government but was rejected by the national government after protests from environmental groups. In 2017, construction of the road began and is still ongoing as of February 2018.
