The Defileul Jiului National Park (Romanian: Parcul Național Defileul Jiului) is a protected area classified as a national park under IUCN category II. It is located in Romania, covering 92% of Gorj County and 8% of Hunedoara County.

Location

The National Park is found along a gorge created by the Jiu River. This gorge is located between the Vâlcan Mountains and Parâng Mountains, which are part of the Southern Carpathians, in the northern area of Gorj County.

Description

Defileul Jiului National Park, covering an area of 11,127 hectares (27,500 acres), was designated as a protected area by Government Decision Number 1581 in 2005 (published in Romanian Official Paper Number 38 on January 12, 2006). This area is home to a wide range of plant and animal species.
