Unzen-Amakusa National Park (雲仙天草国立公園, Unzen-Amakusa Kokuritsu Kōen) is a national park located in Nagasaki, Kumamoto, and Kagoshima Prefectures in Japan. Created in 1934, the park is named after Mount Unzen, an active volcano in the center of the Shimabara Peninsula, and the Amakusa islands in the Yatsushiro Sea. The area has a strong link to the early history of Christianity in Japan and includes many places connected to Kakure Kirishitan.
History
The park was created as the Unzen National Park in 1934. After it was expanded, the park was renamed the Unzen-Amakusa National Park in 1956.
