It is named after Urho Kekkonen, who was a former president and prime minister of Finland.

The Suomujoki river flows through the northern parts of the park. Marked trails in the western part of the park are easy for even inexperienced hikers, while the wilderness areas are suitable for long and challenging trips.

Most trips to Urho Kekkonen National Park begin at the Kiilopää fell center, the Aittajärvi lake along the Suomujoki river, or Raja-Jooseppi. Hikers often end their trips near the Saariselkä fell line, such as at the top of Sokosti, the highest fell in the area. Reindeer herding remains a common way of life in the region.
