Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park is a protected area located in the Heilongjiang and Jilin Provinces of northeastern China. It covers an area of 14,612 square kilometers (5,642 square miles) in the southern part of the Changbai Mountains. The park is bordered by Russia and North Korea to the east.
The national park was started in 2017 during a test period managed by the National Forestry and Grassland Administration. In the same year, management was moved to the Northeast China Tiger and Leopard National Park Administration. This group works with local governments and is responsible for protecting the park’s natural resources. During the test period, factories and mines in the area were closed. Fences, buildings, farms, livestock, and hunting equipment were removed. Wild animals were rescued and released, feeding stations for wildlife were created, and efforts began to repair broken habitats.
Coniferous and mixed broadleaf forests cover 9,483 square kilometers (3,661 square miles) of the park. These forests provide homes for 355 species of vertebrates, including the Siberian tiger, Amur leopard, brown bear, Asiatic black bear, Eurasian lynx, sable, sika deer, red deer, red-crowned crane, and golden eagle.
