It is located in the Llanos region and covers parts of the municipalities of Francisco de Miranda and José Rondón (formerly Las Mercedes) in Guárico state.

The park was established on March 7, 1974. It covers an area of 585,750 hectares (5,857 square kilometers).

In 1974, the Venezuelan government, led by President Rafael Caldera, created the park in an area south of Guárico state, within the municipalities of Las Mercedes del Llano and Miranda. This large plain park includes 569,000 hectares.

Protecting a sample of this natural area under the National Park system was necessary to preserve its original conditions for future generations.

The climate is warm and has two distinct seasons: a dry season from November to March and a wet season from April to October.
