Zakouma National Park (Arabic: حديقة زاكوما الوطنية) is a 3,000 km (1,158 sq mi) national park in southeastern Chad, located on the border between Guéra Region and Salamat Region. Zakouma is the oldest national park in the country, established as a national park in 1963 by a presidential order, which provided it with the strongest level of protection allowed by Chad’s laws. Since 2010, the park has been managed by the nonprofit group African Parks, working together with the government of Chad.
Nouabalé-Ndoki National Park is a protected area located in the Republic of the Congo. It was created in 1993 in the northern provinces of the country. The park is home to forest elephants, large primates such as western lowland gorillas and eastern chimpanzees, as well as bongo antelope.
Odzala-Kokoua National Park, also known as Odzala National Park, is located in the Republic of the Congo. The park was first protected in 1935, became a biosphere reserve in 1977, and received its official name through a presidential decree in 2001. The park is home to about 100 mammal species and one of Africa’s most diverse groups of primates.
Moukalaba-Doudou National Park (French: Parc national de Moukalaba-Doudou) is a national park located in Gabon. It covers an area of 4,500 square kilometers (1,700 square miles). The park includes different types of habitats, such as humid rain forests and savanna grasslands.
Minkébé National Park (French: Parc National de Minkébé) is a national park located in the far northeast of Gabon. It spans an area of 7,570 km². The WWF noted the area needed protection as early as 1989 and worked to protect the forest since 1997.
Mayumba National Park (French: Parc national de Mayumba) is a national park in southwestern Gabon. It is a narrow strip of land with beaches, dunes, savanna, and rainforest in the far south of the country, between Mayumba and the border with the Congo. The park includes 60 kilometers of the most important nesting beaches for leatherback turtles on Earth.
Lopé National Park (French: Parc national de la Lopé) is a national park located in central Gabon. The park is surrounded by the Ogooué River to the north and the Chaillu Massif to the south. It covers an area of 4,912 square kilometers (1,897 square miles).
Loango National Park (French: Parc national de Loango) is a protected area in western Gabon. It helps preserve many different coastal environments, including part of the 220-square-kilometre (85 sq mi) Iguéla Lagoon. This lagoon is the only major example of a typical western African lagoon system that is protected within a national park.
Ivindo National Park (French: Parc national d’Ivindo) is a protected area in east-central Gabon, located in Central Africa. It covers part of the Ogooué-Ivindo and Ogooué-Lolo provinces. The park was established in August 2002 by then-President Omar Bongo during the Earth Summit in Johannesburg, along with Gabon’s 12 other land-based national parks.
Crystal Mountains National Park (French: Parc National des Monts de Cristal) is one of 13 national parks in Gabon. It is located in the Monts de Cristal region on the western edge of the Woleu-Ntem Plateau, between Equatorial Guinea and the Ogooué River. The park has a twin, which includes Mbe National Park and Mt Sene National Park.
